One of the oldest counties in the state, and dating
to
the
Republic of Texas (1837), Colorado County
was named for the 900 mile Colorado River that
run through it. The Colorado River is the largest river that bo th begins
and ends within the borders of the state of Texas.
Columbus, the county seat,
sits along what is known as the Lower Colorado River Trail, a stretch that
extends 600 river miles southeast from the pecan orchards of San Saba through Austin, on down to Matagorda Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
Visitors can enjoy the natural
beauty of the Colorado River during the many athletic events whose routes
typically wind along the riverbanks; or by visiting historic Beason’s Park,
which overlooks the river and provides a nice view of several interesting
bridges.
More adventurous souls may also consider traversing the river by canoe
or even by riverboat and for those who prefer a more structured setting,
Colorado County has a variety of aquatic facilities to choose from.
This is Bluebonnet Country!
Columbus
is located in the heart of
Bluebonnet country and is home to the Bluebonnet,
Indian Paintbrush, Indian Blankets and literally hundreds of species of the
Sunflower. A majority of the wildflowers will bloom throughout the summer,
although sightings usually begin in mid-March. Our interstates and highways have
ideal scenic photo opportunities.
