In 1848, Scotsman Robert Robson
built a castle on the river and began providing homes to local and itinerant
artists. In 1860, one of Robson's guests, Columbus
artist Gustavus Augustus Behné, who studied art in
Germany and under Thomas Sully in Philadelphia, received a commission to paint
what would turn out to be General Sam Houston’s favorite portrait of himself.
A love of the arts still alive in Columbus and
today creative spirits can rejuvenate at the Live Oak Art Center,
housed in the historic Brunson Building downtown.
Established by local citizens
in 1954, the gallery shines as a beacon for new and aspiring artists, and art
lovers by providing workshops for all ages, hosting rotating exhibits, and
maintaining an outstanding permanent collection. Of special interest are the
‘meet the artist’ socials and exhibit openings.
The building and adjoining
patio also serve as a meeting facility for weddings, galas and other special
events.
